Hiring process at Windsor Police

The application process may appear detailed and time-consuming, but it is designed to help us identify the very best applicants to become Windsor Police Service officers. It may take anywhere from three to six months to complete from beginning to end. As such, you must be mentally and physically ready to complete each step of the process before you apply.

Our rigorous hiring process ensures that we only choose candidates who have the necessary skills and qualities to excel in this demanding profession. STEP 1

PRE-BACKGROUND
QUESTIONNAIRE

The completion of a series of documents to determine suitability for moving on to the Local Focus Interview.

References will be requested at this phase, but not contacted at this time.

STEP 2

LOCAL FOCUS
INTERVIEW

The in-person interview will evaluate applicants based on their community service orientation, embodiment of ethics and professionalism, demonstration of initiative, and possession of excellent organizational skills.

STEP 3

PHYSICAL FITNESS
PREP TEST

The physical fitness test  typically involves assessments of strength, endurance, agility, and cardiovascular fitness.

STEP 4

ESSENTIAL
COMPETENCY
INTERVIEW

The in-person interview will determine whether or not you have the knowledge and skills ability to become an officer. Results are valid for one year and are transferable between police services. RESILIENCY: The ability to “bounce back” when faced with disappointment, defeat, or failure. The ability to retain perspective and cope after a stressful event. TEAMWORK: The ability to build relationships and work as part of a team. COMMUNICATION: The ability to appropriately and effectively communicate in a manner that demonstrates tact, understanding, confidentiality and empathy. PROBLEM SOLVING: The ability to solve problems and think critically, applying common sense while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of issues. Ability to use reason, even when dealing with emotional topics. LEADERSHIP: Having self confidence and the ability to be an effective leader in being will to make unpopular decisions or act when others are unwilling. INCLUSIVITY: The ability to demonstrate cultural intelligence, recognizing the value of diversity and seek out opportunities to gain new knowledge and understand our community.

STEP 5

BACKGROUND AND
PSYCHOLOGICAL

A thorough investigation of your background, including contacting all references. Psychological testing consists of computerized testing and a meeting with

a registered psychologist. These phases are completed simultaneously.

STEP 6

FINAL INTERVIEW
& FILE REVIEW

A final interview with 3 members of the WPS Senior Leadership Team, including the Director of HR and file review will be conducted. The panel then reviews the candidate’s complete file, and any final questions are asked and addressed. The candidate’s suitability and potential for the role are thoroughly assessed.

STEP 7

OFFER OF
EMPLOYMENT

Pending medical clearance and approval from the WPS board.
